Fertility, mortality and migration are the direct determinants of population change or growth as well as the structure of the population such as age distribution. They are therefore direct inputs to population projections. These three demographic pillars have other uses in other sectors of the population. Knowledge about fertility (liver births) levels and trends enables a more efficient allocation of resources by planners for future socio economic demands such as in the education sector, health environment etc. Mortality (death) is an indicator of the well-being health status of a population. It is therefore an important variable in planning in the health sector including mitigation of deaths due to communicable and non-communicable diseases, maternal and child deaths. Migration has socioeconomic consequences at state community and individual levels at the receiving and sending areas. We provide detailed fertility, mortality and migration analysis and estimation from census, survey and vital registration data.

The census is the traditional source of information on population size. However, censuses are undertaken every five or ten years depending on the country. In between censuses, policy makers and planners need information on population size for the current year and the future.

Population projections are a cost-effective way of providing such information. We provide population projections at national and sub-national levels to aid planning.

The application of population/demographic and statistical modelling to social issues in various sectors is an integral part of our work to inform policy in social issues some of which may be controversial issues.

To build human capacity we undertake training in survey and census data analysis with focus on the population and demographic aspects of the data. We also undertake training in population projections and estimation.

Population projections are usually provided at higher geographical levels such as national and provincial/state levels and often do meet the planning needs of administrators at lower geographical levels such as municipalities and wards. We provide population estimates at low geographical levels to meet the planning needs of administrators and planners at these levels.
